If you’re working toward equal (50/50) parenting time, a few common schedule structures:

  • Week on/week off: alternating full weeks, with a fixed exchange day and time. Some families add a weekday overnight for the parent not currently in possession to shorten the gap.
  • 2-2-5-5: Monday/Tuesday with one parent, Wednesday/Thursday with the other, then alternating long weekends.
  • Extended weekends: 1st/3rd/5th weekends (Friday through Monday) plus a weekday overnight, splitting the calendar close to evenly over a year.

Whatever structure you use, plan for summer break, holidays, and school breaks explicitly — and consider adding a right of first refusal (offering the other parent extra time before using a babysitter) and clear rules for phone or video contact during the other parent’s time.
