A few practical basics for making the most of your time as a non-custodial parent:

  • Never promise a pickup you can’t guarantee. A missed pickup is genuinely hard on a child — if something truly unavoidable comes up, call as early as possible.
  • Feed your kids before drop-off. It avoids one of the most common friction points between co-parents.
  • Keep a simple stash of kid basics on hand — snacks, an extra toothbrush, kids’ pain reliever, spare socks and underwear — so small things don’t become big problems.
  • Reassure young kids they’ll see their other parent again when your time together ends; a quick phone call to the other parent can ease separation anxiety without undermining your time.
  • If you have a new partner, let your kids ease into the relationship on their own timeline, and never expect a stepparent to replace their other parent.
  • Take safety seriously — never leave young kids unsupervised in public, and talk through what to do if you get separated in a store or crowd.
  • Take photos of your time together — they matter to your kids, and can be useful documentation of a healthy, active relationship if it’s ever relevant in court.
