Fair or not, how you present yourself in court shapes a judge’s first impression — and Texas courts tend to be conservative. The goal is to look like someone who takes the process, and your children, seriously.
General guidelines
- Dress conservatively — business-casual works for most people. A well-fitting, simple outfit reads better than something flashy or expensive.
- Keep hair and facial hair neat and well-groomed.
- Skip casual wear like t-shirts, jeans, or sneakers if you can.
Body language and speaking
- Stand and sit with open, relaxed posture — avoid crossed arms, clenched fists, or slouching.
- Speak clearly and loud enough to be heard, and address the judge as “Your Honor.”
- Maintain steady eye contact when speaking to the judge.
- Stay composed even if the other party becomes emotional or confrontational — how you react is being watched too.
