General courtroom conduct

  • Be on time, dressed appropriately, and attentive throughout.
  • Turn off your phone. Don’t read, chew gum, or eat in the courtroom.
  • Stand when responding to the court or when the judge enters.
  • Only speak with your attorney by passing notes during proceedings — don’t whisper or nudge them.
  • Never bring weapons to the courthouse.

While testifying

  • Always tell the truth.
  • Listen carefully, understand the question, and answer only what’s asked — don’t volunteer extra information.
  • If you don’t know or don’t remember, say so — don’t guess.
  • Pause briefly before answering, to give your attorney time to object if needed.
  • Stay calm and polite, even under pressure from opposing counsel.
  • Answer “yes” or “no” clearly when that’s what’s asked, rather than “uh-huh.”
