The key isn’t when you’re ready to start potty training — it’s when your child is. Starting too early is the most common cause of setbacks. Readiness usually shows up between ages 1 and 3, and girls are often ready before boys.

Signs of readiness

  • Can walk, and stays dry for longer stretches (including after naps)
  • Understands words like “potty” and what’s expected
  • Can tell you when they’re uncomfortable, and wants to learn

What helps

  • Make the toilet easy to reach, with a step stool or child seat
  • Use cloth training pants rather than pull-ups that feel like diapers
  • Praise progress without making a huge deal of it
  • Never scold accidents — they’re normal
  • If accidents pile up, take a break and try again later
