A short safety conversation with your child can make a real difference. Consider walking through a simple list together, and having them help you build their own version.

Always

  • Get permission before going somewhere
  • Trust your gut feelings
  • Use the buddy system
  • Tell a trusted adult if a touch makes you feel uncomfortable
  • Know at least two ways out of the house in an emergency
  • Call 911 if you’re scared and need help

Never

  • Keep a secret that makes you feel bad
  • Accept gifts, money, or rides without checking with a parent first
  • Help a stranger with directions or a “lost pet”
  • Tell a caller you’re home alone
