Most childhood injuries happen at home — a few basic precautions go a long way.

Choking & poisoning

  • Cut hot dogs, grapes, and other round foods into small pieces for kids under 4
  • Keep small objects, medicines, and cleaning supplies out of reach and in original containers
  • Use cabinet locks for anything toxic

Burns & fires

  • Set the water heater to 120°F or lower, and check bath water temperature before use
  • Turn pot handles inward and use back burners when cooking
  • Install smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, and keep a fire extinguisher on hand

Other basics

  • Use safety gates at stairs and outlet covers throughout the house
  • Store any firearms unloaded, locked, and separate from ammunition
  • Keep a first-aid kit, and learn basic first aid and CPR

Post the Poison Control number, 1-800-222-1222, along with 911, somewhere visible.
