Drowning can happen in seconds and in very little water — it’s a leading cause of injury death for young children.

Inside the house

  • Never leave a small child alone near any water — tubs, toilets, buckets, or wading pools
  • Keep bathroom doors closed and use toilet lid locks
  • Gather bath supplies before running the water, and check the temperature before your child gets in
  • Never leave the room during bath time — if you must, take the child with you

Outside the house

  • Stay within arm’s reach of children in or near water — pools, ponds, or lakes
  • Use approved life jackets and arrange swim lessons with a qualified instructor
  • Fence pools with self-closing, self-latching gates
  • Know CPR and keep a first-aid kit nearby
