Texas law doesn’t set a specific age for leaving a child home alone — it requires that a child not be put in a situation beyond what they can reasonably handle. Preschool-age children should never be left alone. For older kids, it comes down to maturity, judgment, and how long they’d be on their own.

Before leaving your child home alone, make sure they

  • Feel comfortable with the idea, and know how to reach 911 and you
  • Know basic first aid and where the first-aid kit is
  • Know the house rules for the stove, knives, and other hazards
  • Know never to open the door to a stranger, or say they’re home alone on the phone
  • Know the family plan for emergencies, including a nearby trusted adult

Start with short absences, check in by phone, and talk afterward about how it went before extending the time.
